Danimer Scientific and WinCup are the joint winners of the 2020 Bioplastics Innovation Award issued by the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) Bioplastics Department. The two companies jointly developed the first commercially available straw made of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a material that has proven to be a reliable biodegradable alternative to traditional plastics.
WinCup uses Danimer Scientific's Nodax PHA to manufacture Phade straws. The company claims that this straw will completely degrade in any environment and will not leave microplastics. Consumers' demand for environmentally friendly plastic products is growing exponentially. Phade straws are the first plastic straws on the market that can meet this demand without losing the plastic texture. Phade straws and stirrers have unique properties and are not sensitive to temperature and high temperature transportation conditions.
"We are honored to present the Bioplastics Innovation Award to Danimer Scientific and WinCup for their work in continuous innovation," said Patrick Krieger, Director of the Sustainability and Materials Department of PLASTICS. "In 2018, Danimer and Pepsi Recognized as compostable potato chip bags, the company seeks to provide sustainable end-of-life solutions for packaging that is difficult to recycle. Since then, they have made great progress in production and compounding with PHA, and finally formed a This kind of marine biodegradable plastic straws. This product also embodies a larger principle of the plastics industry-innovatively solve problems and create products that consumers want."
Danimer Scientific is a pioneer in creating more sustainable and natural ways to make biodegradable and compostable plastic products. The company is headquartered in the United States and holds 125 patents in nearly 20 countries, involving a series of manufacturing processes and biopolymer formulations.
Danimer Scientific Chief Marketing Officer Scott Tuten said: "Innovation is a collaborative process, and this recognition of our partnership with WinCup highlights the success that can be achieved when raw material and final product manufacturers work together to bring new materials to market. Our first launch This backyard compostable and marine biodegradable straw is just the beginning. We look forward to continuing cooperation with WinCup to provide consumers with a reliable and sustainable choice of disposable products."
WinCup is a disposable food and beverage manufacturer based in the United States. Brad Laporte, chief operating officer of WinCup, said: "Consumers' demand for innovative products continues to grow, which can minimize the impact on the environment while maintaining excellent performance. We need an innovative material to meet this demand. Danimer Scientific's collaborative development of PHA-based straws and stirrers is a big step in changing the future of disposable plastics."
Michael Winters, President of WinCup Food Services, added: "Customers and the market have responded very positively to this innovation and related new product launches. The demand for Phade is expected to be very high in the coming months. Our work has been recognized by the Plastics Industry Association. We are particularly honored."
